ORQUESTA SINFÓNICA RADIOTELEVISIÓN ESPAÑOLA (RTVE)

The Symphony Orchestra and Choir of Radiotelevisión Española is a symphony-choral formation dedicated to the performance and dissemination of quality musical culture, within the framework of the RTVE Corporation. It is the only institution of its kind in Spain with an intrinsically audiovisual role, –as everything it performs is broadcast through TVE (television), RNE (radio) and RTVE.es (Internet)–; as well as with an intense activity recording radio and television tunes, and soundtracks for TV shows and movies.

On May 27, 1965, the RTVE Symphony Orchestra was born as one of the youngest orchestras of the European radios and televisions under the supervision of its founder-conductor, Igor Markevitch. After him, conductors such as Antoni Ros-Marbà, Enrique García-Asensio, Odón Alonso, Miguel Ángel Gómez-Martínez, Arpad Joó, Sergiu Comissiona, Enrique García-Asensio, Adrian Leaper, and Carlos Kalmar have taken on the baton. In September 2016, maestro Miguel Ángel Gómez-Martínez was named, once again, principal conductor of the RTVE Symphony Orchestra.

The Symphony Orchestra and Choir of Radiotelevisión Española currently offers more than 85 concerts each year, divided in the Subscription Season, Young Musicians Series, Choral Series, and Radio Clásica Concert Series (Chamber Music), as well as in Lyric Galas and other exceptional and pedagogical concerts. In addition, the Symphony also offers up to 50 general rehearsals open to the public.

The RTVE Symphony Orchestra can often be found in the main Spanish festivals, such as the ones of Granada, Santander, and Cuenca. It also develops its international presence through the exchanges with the EBU (European Broadcasting Union) and its performances abroad in renown places such as Carnegie Hall in New York (1971), Royal Festival Hall in London (1975), Tonhalle in Zurich (1986), Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris (1986), Suntory Hall in Tokyo (1988), L’ Arsenal in Metz (1989), Enescu Festival in Bucharest (1995), Strasbourg (1998) and Warsaw’s Fall Festival (2008). In 2007, the RTVE Symphony Orchestra toured different music halls throughout Japan.

Among the many awards it has received, some highlights are the Honorary Medal of the Music and Dance International Festival of Granada, “Extraordinary Golden Antenna” of the Spanish Federation of Radio and Television Associations; “Iris Prize” to the Best Soundtrack for the TV show ‘Isabel’; and “Special Iris Prize” from the Academy of TV Science and Arts for its 50 years of brilliant professional career and for its contribution to the Spanish musical culture.
