Second Prize

Born in South Korea in 1986, pianist David Jae-Weon Huh is recognized for his sense of poetry and technical brilliance.

His talent has been acknowledged in many national and international piano competitions. He was a grand prize winner of the Korea Music Association Competition where he was awarded the Minister of Culture Award, and he also obtained a First Prize both at the Chopin Piano Competition in Korea and Korea Music Competition. In 2007, he began attracting international attention after winning the First Prize at the China Shanghai International Competition. Subsequently, he has been a prize winner at the Cleveland and at the Hamamatsu piano competitions. Most recently, in 2015, he has been awarded Second Prize and Silver Medal at the 18th edition of the Paloma O’Shea Santander International Piano Competition.

He has performed extensively throughout Europe, Asia and the United States. He appeared in numerous festivals including recitals at Animato en Paris, San Francisco Music Festival, Leipzig Euro Music Festival, Euregio Music Festival, Ferruccio Busoni International Piano Festival, International Holland Music Sessions, Yamaha Rising Artist Series, KNUA Pianist Series, Kumho Young Artist Series in Seoul, and Asia Music Festival in Kanazawa, and Nakanoshima International Music Festival in Japan. Most recently, he successfully made a Royal Concertgebouw debut in Amsterdam during the New Masters Tour Series.

He has also performed as a soloist with symphony orchestras, including those of Tokyo, KNUA and Radio Televisión Española and many philharmonic orchestras, examples of which are the Prime, Shanghai, Pohang, Daegu, and Mostly Philharmonic. In addition, he has been presented extensively on chamber music concerts and especially collaborated with highly revered cellist Myung Wha Chung.

A graduate from Seoul Arts High School, where he was named a distinguished alumnus, he holds both a Bachelor of Music and a Master of Arts degree from Korea National University of Arts, where he studied under the guidance of Choong-Mo Kang. He then pursued a Master of Music at New England Conservatory of Music in Boston on a full scholarship, studying with Wha Kyung Byun and Russell Sherman. When he moved to Germany, he was accepted into a solo-class program at the Hochschule für Musik, Theater und Medien Hannover, where he continues his studies under Bernd Goetzke and Ewa Kupiec.
